Sustainable Ecotourism Development in the Embera Indigenous Communities, Chagres National Park, Panama
The Embera, one of seven native tribes found in Panama, have established small communities along the banks of the Chagres River where they practice traditional subsistence agriculture and hunting/fishing. In 1984 the Chagres National Park was established and restricting their traditional activities and greatly limiting their source of income and livelihood. To survive, they formed non-profit tourism and community development organizations and developed ecotourism programs based on nature and traditional culture.
