Kenya Wildlife Trafficking Assessment
Kenya continues to serve as a transit point for wildlife products moving out of Africa, with shipments originating from a variety of countries, including Mozambique, Madagascar, DRC, and Nigeria.
However, the country’s role in wildlife trafficking in the air sector appears to be declining. In 2015, Kenya was linked to 26% of known trafficking instances involving Africa, but the country accounted for fewer than 8% of instances from 2016-2019. While the volume of known ivory trafficking instances along Kenyan air routes has remained constant in recent years (2017-2019), the number of known instances of other species has decreased. Today, small-scale, worked ivory is the most commonly smuggled wildlife product in known Kenyan trafficking instances.
