A Global Assessment of Community Based Natural Resource Management: Addressing the Critical Challenges of the Rural Sector A Global Assessment of Community Based Natural Resource Management: Addressing the Critical Challenges of the Rural Sector CBNRM: AN ASSESSMENT WITH RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE FUTURE. Rural development issues are critical not only for the rural areas themselves but also for addressing pressing global concerns of food security (FS), climate change, biodiversity conservation, poverty reduction, provision of environmental goods and services, and good governance. Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) has been a rural development strategy for over 30 years. This paper has a two-fold objective: to assess the CBNRM experience in order to improve the performance of CBNRM itself, and to evaluate the lessons learned from CBNRM for critical issues – especially food security and climate change. A Move From Minor to Major: Competing Discourses of Non-Timber Forest Products in India Since 1988 the role of so-called non-timber or minor forest products (NTFPs) has gained a renewed significance in discussions of forest policy in India. Joint forest management (JFM) agreements, which encourage the participation of forest-dependent people in programmes to restore forest cover on degraded lands, form the basis of the new strategy, with the enthusiastic support of donor agencies. The state has promoted access to NTFPs as a major short-term incentive offered by forest departments to encourage villagers to contribute to this process. JFM agreements re-attach responsibilities to forest-dependent peoples who are, in the eyes of the forest department, a major cause of deforestation. But NTFPs are also central to discussions of bio-diversity. Furthermore, the rising rates of legal and illegal extraction of timber has led to bans on all logging in some States, leaving NTFPs as one of the few potential sources of forest revenue. JFM is not the only element in state forest policy, however, and other patches of forest land are being offered to private industry to be used as captive plantations. A Planetary Health Innovation for Disease, Food and Water Challenges in Africa A Planetary Health Innovation for Disease, Food and Water Challenges in Africa Many communities in low- and middle-income countries globally lack sustainable, cost-effective and mutually beneficial solutions for infectious disease, food, water, and poverty challenges. This research supports the hypothesis that agricultural development and fertilizer use in West Africa increases the burden of the parasitic disease schistosomiasis by fueling the growth of submerged aquatic vegetation that chokes out water access points and serves as habitat for freshwater snails that transmit Schistosoma parasites to more than 200 million people globally. A Review on the Fate, Human Health and Environmental Impacts, and Regulation of Antibiotics Used in Aquaculture A Review on the Fate, Human Health and Environmental Impacts, and Regulation of Antibiotics Used in Aquaculture Antibiotics have been a necessary component of animal husbandry and aquaculture since they were first used in clinical settings in the 1940s to meet the rising demand for foods generated from animals. Because of this, large-scale industrial animal production has become a hotspot for the evolution and spread of ARGs (antibiotic resistant genes), potentially posing a threat to public health. This review is focused on human health hazards related to antibiotic usages, ARGs in cattle, and aquaculture systems. Advancing Gender in the Environment: Gender in Fisheries—A Sea of Opportunities Advancing Gender in the Environment: Gender in Fisheries—A Sea of Opportunities Produced by USAID’s Office of Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GenDev), USAID’s Office of Forestry and Biodiversity (FAB), and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the guide provides an overview of the unique roles and contributions women make in the wild-caught fisheries sector. The guide also explains how persistent gender inequalities limit women’s economic empowerment, and increased risks of gender-based violence negatively impact the potential of women to thrive and contribute towards strong economies. Gender in Fisheries – A Sea of Opportunities summarizes research on the intersection of gender and wild-caught fisheries, exploring the ways in which fisheries offer important entry points to enhance gender equality and women’s economic empowerment while also contributing to more effective interventions and more sustainable outcomes. This guide will be an important resource, particularly for USAID missions and implementing partners working in sustainable fisheries management. Development practitioners can use the guide to access the latest evidence on gender empowerment and sustainable fisheries management; find tools and resources to conduct gender analyses; design strategic interventions to strengthen program design and implementation through the development of comprehensive gender action plans; and learn more about how to develop results chains to help programs define goals and refine assumptions. Advancing Global Food Security in the Face of a Changing Climate Advancing Global Food Security in the Face of a Changing Climate This report puts forward recommendations for how the US government can better address climate change through its policies on global agricultural development. It argues for the United States to rally international resources and deploy its agricultural research enterprise—its universities, research institutes, and agrifood businesses—to gather more information about how climate change will affect the global food system and develop the innovations to manage its impacts. It presents evidence that by enhancing the public sector’s partnerships with businesses and civil society, solutions that benefit populations around the world, from farmers in Africa to those in the United States, can be found.
