This survey of the forest sector of 3 of Vietnam's provinces covers 3 areas. First, a survey is made of the forest sector of Vietnam as a whole. Second, examples are provided from 3 provinces where local communities have managed to set up their own system for management of a natural forest. Finally, the paper makes suggestions for further learning in economics and silviculture to increase the recognition forestry by farmers and local communities. 2002
