This USAID-funded evaluation considers nature-based community development activities in areas around the Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks, of Uganda and suggests priorities for further development assistance to eight community-based organizations (CBOs). USAID and other major partners supported Integrated Conservation and Development activities in and around these two national parks. The development assistance provided by conservation and development partners contributed significantly to community development in Park areas. Eight CBOs were established identified in parishes adjacent to the National Parks. The CBOs played an important role in tourism and community development. The author notes that efforts in developing community-based tourism have been successful and are worthwhile continuing. He suggests further capacity building of the CBOs by the national tourism marketing and training agency and a national effort to market ecotourism were urgent priorities.
