FCMC participates in MINAM workshop to build capacity in support of Peru’s forest monitoring system
The workshop was titled “Module II and III of the National GHG Inventory Course on the Topic of Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) for REDD+ Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) in Peru.” It was part of a series of workshops aimed at building capacity for regional government representatives, local non-governmental organizations, and other institutions. This workshop provided broad guidance and information on various remote sensing technologies, mapping options using remote sensing, evaluation of remote sensing-derived products, as well as the status of MRV activities in Peru. Presentations were provided by a range of participants from various U.S. institutions including the U.S. Forest Service, Clark University, the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC), Boston University, and Michigan State University. In addition, presentations were given by MINAM, the Association for Research and Development (AIDER), Proyecto REDD+, the National Forest Conservation Program (PNCB), The General Directorate for Territorial Planning (DGOT), La Molina National Agricultural University (UNALM), RAINFOR, and the United Nations REDD+ Program (UN-REDD).
The trip also included meetings with MINAM to discuss progress on various ongoing activities included in FCMC’s overall initiative to support Peru’s forest monitoring system. Under this initiative, several forest cover and change products are being generated by MINAM based on capacity building from the University of Maryland (UMD), as well as the creation of an independent validation dataset. This independent validation dataset, created as part of a collaborative effort between CI, UMD, and MINAM, will enable the validation and comparison of multiple regional and national-level forest cover and deforestation products.
