2011/9 Modeling and Managing Watersheds Workshop/Training (Kigali, Rwanda)
Overview
The workshop addressed the key challenges to watershed management and explored the data, tools, research and resource needs required to strengthen watershed management throughout Africa. Case studies were presented for pilot projects in Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia, undertaken by the US Forest Service and the Wildlife Conservation Society to address the influence of forest cover/land-use on water quality/quantity. The second half of the workshop focused on technical training on different approaches and tools for modeling the impacts of land-use practices on water quality and quantity. Models specifically covered were: WaSSI-CB (Water Supply Stress Index-Carbon and Biodiversity), InVest (Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs), and ARIES (ARtificial Intelligence for Ecosystem Services).
