A Planetary Health Innovation for Disease, Food and Water Challenges in Africa
Many communities in low- and middle-income countries globally lack sustainable, cost-effective and mutually beneficial solutions for infectious disease, food, water, and poverty challenges. This research supports the hypothesis that agricultural development and fertilizer use in West Africa increases the burden of the parasitic disease schistosomiasis by fueling the growth of submerged aquatic vegetation that chokes out water access points and serves as habitat for freshwater snails that transmit Schistosoma parasites to more than 200 million people globally.

African Drought Adaptation Forum Report 3
The Third African Drought Adaptation Forum was held 17th-19th September 2008 at the United Nations Conference Centre, Addis Ababa. This three-day workshop was sponsored by the United Nations Development Program’s Drylands Development Centre (UNDP-DDC), UN-International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR) and the hosts the Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). It brought together some 80 policy makers, government officials, UN agencies, donors, practitioners from local and international NGO’s and CBO’s, the media and applied researchers from around Africa, and the Arab states to exchange practical experiences, findings and ideas on how to adapt to the increasing threat of drought and climate change in the drylands of Africa.

African Union AMR Landmark Report: Voicing African Priorities on the Active Pandemic
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a leading cause of death in the African region, surpassing fatalities from malaria, HIV, and TB. In response to this critical threat, the region has adopted the AMR Global Action Plan and the African Union Framework for Antimicrobial Resistance Control 2020 – 2025, which is tailored to meet the specific needs of African nations through a coordinated approach.

Coastal Resilience to Climate Change: Integrating Biodiversity, Adaptation, and Sustainable Landscapes in West Africa
USAID’s West Africa Biodiversity and Climate Change (WA BiCC) activity aims to improve biodiversity conservation, increase climate resilience, and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across forest landscapes in West Africa. By working through regional partners, and with targeted national and sub-national institutions, WA BiCC increases the capacity of institutions at all levels to reduce wildlife trafficking, promote cross-border law enforcement and governance, reduce deforestation and forest degradation, and promote climate-resilient, low-emission growth in coastal areas across West Africa. Read more in this case study.

Conservation Enterprises Learning Brief: Assessing the Core Assumption that Enterprise Benefits Promote Conservation Attitudes and Behaviors - Summary of Resources
One of the core assumptions in a theory of change for supporting conservation enterprises is that the benefits–both monetary and non-monetary—participants receive promote desired attitudes and behaviors toward biodiversity conservation. This brief summarizes select resources that have more systematically assessed how increased benefits have led to attitudes and behavior change. In taking a closer look at these studies, conservation enterprise teams should reflect on how they might contribute to the evidence base for this key assumption.

Democratising forest business: a compendium of successful locally controlled forest business organisations
The main purpose of this book is to present 19 case studies from 14 developing countries that show how local people have been democratising forest business. By this is meant the process of asserting collective local control through ownership and management arrangements so that the integrated needs of families, communities and indigenous peoples remain central to the business operation.

The University of British Columbia’s Fisheries Economic Resource Unit (UBC/FERU) was commissioned to help implement USAID's Distant Water Fleet (DWF) Research Agenda. Through analysis of the Sea Around Us database, a literature review, and expert interviews, UBC/FERU researchers have characterized interactions between DWF and domestic fishing activities in selected geographies. These results were discussed further in a webinar on June 29, 2022.

Five Facts About Wild-Caught Fisheries & African Development
The Five Facts about Wild-Caught Fisheries and African Development fact sheet describes the role of wild-caught fisheries in food security, resilience and nutrition and presents opportunities and recommendations for intervening in wild-caught fisheries management to improve the livelihoods and food security of the hundreds of millions of people who depend on wild fish for nourishment and income. It also presents a table that illustrates that fish is a better source of many essential vitamins and minerals.

Learning Narrative: #WildEye Training for Investigative Journalism in Southern Africa
Oxpeckers Investigative Environmental Journalism, through a grant from USAID’s VukaNow Activity, developed a powerful new data-driven tool, #WildEye Southern Africa, that addresses a major challenge facing wildlife crime reporters and investigators: the fact that information on these types of activities is hard to find and even harder to track over time, and across borders. This has allowed criminal activity to remain hidden from public scrutiny and hindered reporting on the multi-billion-dollar illegal wildlife trade.

Namibia Case Study: Cost-Benefit Analysis of Curbing Illegal Wildlife Trade
This study investigates the economic implications of investing in curbing IWT through a cost benefit analysis (CBA) of current investments in Namibia and compares the results against an alternative scenario where no investments are being made in curbing IWT as well as to a scenario where more investments are being made in further curbing it. The CBA monetizes costs and benefits from IWT curbing initiatives and sets them up to be consistently compared across time, in order to inform and guide investment decisions.

On the case: Identifying corruption by reviewing wildlife crime court cases in southern Africa
Corruption is a key enabler of wildlife crimes. For agencies and organizations focused on curbing the illegal wildlife trade, reviewing historical cases can be useful to establish a baseline of knowledge on court performance. Such reviews can inform the design of interventions that build the capacity of investigators, prosecutors, and the judiciary to target higher-level organizers and financiers. This practice note outlines learning from TRAFFIC's review of wildlife crime court cases in southern Africa to assess missed opportunities to identify corruption, and barriers to investigating and charging corrupt actors.

Right Priorities for Africa’s Power Sector: An Evaluation of Dams Under the Programme of Infrastructure Development for Africa (PIDA)
Under the auspices of the African Union, in 2012 African heads of state adopted and endorsed the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) as the blueprint for the continent’s infrastructure development agenda. PIDA - which is governed by the African Development Bank, the African Union Commission and NEPAD - is not a nancing mechanism in its own right, but rather is intended to act as a vehicle to attract support for an ambitious suite of cross-border infrastructure mega-projects.These projects are valued at a colossal $360 billion up to 2040 and integrate energy, transportation, and water development on a continental scale.

State of Knowledge on Impacts of Illegal Wildlife Trade on National Economies in Southern Africa
A large-scale state of knowledge review was carried out to understand what data and information is available on Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) in southern Africa, its causes and impacts on societies and national economies. The literature review showed that, although a lot of knowledge has been accumulated on IWT in southern Africa, much effort is needed in generating further quantitative knowledge necessary to carry out economic assessments of IWT in different countries in the region. Yet, some countries and institutions collect valuable information and data which would need to be compiled and integrated at national and regional level.
