A Framework for Monitoring, Evaluating, and Learning from Conservation Enterprises A Framework for Monitoring, Evaluating, and Learning from Conservation Enterprises The Conservation Enterprise Learning Group developed a MEL framework for USAID and Implementing Partner staff to use to inform the adaptive management of their CE programs. This framework provides guidance for how to monitor conservation enterprise programs along a theory of change by applying both standard and custom indicators to measure the extent to which conservation enterprises achieve desired biodiversity conservation outcomes. Aligning Conservation and Public Health Goals to Tackle Unsustainable Trade of Mammals Aligning Conservation and Public Health Goals to Tackle Unsustainable Trade of Mammals Unsustainable wildlife trade is a major driver of biodiversity loss and an important public health threat. Yet, effective wildlife trade regulation is currently at odds with food security and economic incentives provided by this global, multibillion-dollar industry. Given such limitations, public health and conservation resources can be aligned to target species for which trade both increases risk of extinction and threatens public health. This study provides a preliminary step in prioritizing species, taxonomic groups, and countries for focused wildlife trade regulation to meet both conservation and public health goals. Biodiversity Data Supports Research on Human Infectious Diseases: Global Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities Biodiversity Data Supports Research on Human Infectious Diseases: Global Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities Research on emerging infectious diseases may require the access to geographical and ecological data of multiple species. The One Health challenge requires interdisciplinary collaboration and data sharing. The contribution of biodiversity data to understand infectious disease dynamics should be acknowledged, strengthened, and promoted. Changing Food Systems and Infection Disease Risks in Low-Income and Middle-Income Countries Changing Food Systems and Infection Disease Risks in Low-Income and Middle-Income Countries The emergence of COVID-19 has drawn the attention of health researchers sharply back to the role that food systems can play in generating human disease burden. But emerging pandemic threats are just one dimension of the complex relationship between agriculture and infectious disease, which is evolving rapidly, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries that are undergoing rapid food system transformation. This resource examines this changing relationship through four current disease issues. Climate Change Impacts on Plant Pathogens, Food Security, and Paths Forward Climate Change Impacts on Plant Pathogens, Food Security, and Paths Forward Plant disease outbreaks pose significant risks to global food security and environmental sustainability worldwide, and result in the loss of primary productivity and biodiversity that negatively impact the environmental and socio-economic conditions of affected regions. Climate change further increases outbreak risks by altering pathogen evolution and host–pathogen interactions and facilitating the emergence of new pathogenic strains. Combating Wildlife Trafficking Case Study Synthesis: Capacity Building for Enforcement and Prosecution Combating Wildlife Trafficking Case Study Synthesis: Capacity Building for Enforcement and Prosecution USAID launched a global case study compilation to collect lessons on an urgent global conservation challenge: how to build capacity for enforcement and prosecution to combat wildlife trafficking. Forty-eight entries were received, and 12 of these were selected for publication here. These cases illustrate the great work that is being done across the globe to combat wildlife trafficking, but importantly, they also provide insight into ways in which other efforts to combat wildlife crime can be improved for bigger impact. This PDF is a compilation of all of the cases. Conservation Enterprise Impact Lab 2022 : Using a Theory of Change to Learn Across Conservation Enterprises Posters Conservation Enterprise Impact Lab 2022 : Using a Theory of Change to Learn Across Conservation Enterprises Posters From May to August 2022, seven activity teams, including USAID staff and implementing partners, from five Missions around the globe joined the second round of the Conservation Enterprises Impact Lab to share with each other their successes and challenges in implementing conservation enterprises. Using the Conservation Enterprise Theory of Change, the teams focused on adaptations to drive toward improved biodiversity conservation and human well-being outcomes. Each activity team produced a poster that illustrates their activity’s theory of change, key assumptions, and lessons learned. The teams presented these posters in a Conservation Enterprise Learning Group final session on August 23, 2022. Conservation Enterprise Planning Checklist Conservation Enterprise Planning Checklist This checklist can be used by practitioners to help plan their conservation enterprise approach. The questions help to identify the important considerations in the context of a particular site. The first set of questions is related to understanding the theory of change for the conservation enterprise approach. The second set of questions focuses on building and improving the necessary enabling conditions focused on the establishment and sustainability of the enterprise itself. The third set of questions focuses on the necessary enabling conditions for assuring other outcomes along the theory of change. The last set of questions are for reflecting on how practitioners will know if the enterprise approach is achieving its purpose of biodiversity conservation. For more information and an example, watch the webinar Setting up for Success: Enabling Conditions for Conservation Enterprises. Financial Incentives Often Fail to Reconcile Agricultural Productivity and Pro-Conservation Behavior Financial Incentives Often Fail to Reconcile Agricultural Productivity and Pro-Conservation Behavior Paying resource users to preserve features of their environment could in theory better align production and conservation goals. However, they often do not due to a range of conservation dilemmas. This research discusses how the design of incentive programs can better align livelihood and environment goals. Gender and Illegal Wildlife Trade A Summary of Recent Evidence Gender and Illegal Wildlife Trade A Summary of Recent Evidence The gender dynamics of the illegal wildlife trade are not well understood. Most wildlife trafficking research has not focused on how men and women may engage with the wildlife trafficking supply chain—whether as poachers, traders, consumers, or even conservationists. However, researchers have explored this evidence gap within the last two years. This brief summarizes seven recent publications and notes how this new research applies to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) programming and priorities for future research to which Agency programs may contribute. Global Governance for Pandemic Prevention and the Wildlife Trade Global Governance for Pandemic Prevention and the Wildlife Trade Although ideas about preventive actions for pandemics have been advanced during the COVID-19 crisis, there has been little consideration for how they can be operationalized through governance structures within the context of the wildlife trade for human consumption. This resource considers the current institutional landscape for pandemic prevention in light of ongoing negotiations of a so-called pandemic treaty and how prevention of zoonotic spillovers from the wildlife trade for human consumption could be incorporated. Helping to Heal Nature and Ourselves Through Human-Rights-Based and Gender-Responsive One Health Helping to Heal Nature and Ourselves Through Human-Rights-Based and Gender-Responsive One Health The health of our planet and humanity is threatened by biodiversity loss, disease, and climate crises. The One Health approach is a pathway to addressing outcomes in term of health and sustainability, but gender issues are largely ignored. By examining the roles and responsibilities of Indigenous and Local People, and especially women, in conserving natural resources, the study shows that women bear a disproportionate health, poverty, and climate burden.
