What is the RIS Reference Format?
We are pleased to announce that RIS documents can now be imported into the RM Portal. Some things you should know about RIS:
- RIS is a standardized tag format that enables citation programs to exchange data.
- An RIS file is a plain text file that can contain multiple references. RIS files can be exported from reference software such as EndNote and Zotero. Each reference is composed of a variable number of fields; and each field is preceded by a six-character label or "tag." Some tags are specific only to certain reference types. Each tag must be in a specific format, and certain other rules apply to all tags. Refer to to the RIS Format Specification for more information.
- There are a number of applications that can be used with RIS files. The industry leader is EndNote, which is commercial software. However, if you would like free software for the use of RIS files, Zotero provides a solution.
