Brownbag Presentation - Social and Biodiversity Impact Assessment (SBIA) Manual for REDD+ Projects
|
The Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Standards, used to assess multiple benefits of the majority of forest carbon projects, provide robust standards; however, until now there has been limited guidance on how to undertake credible and cost-effective impact assessment. Forest Trends, the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA), Fauna & Flora International (FFI) and Rainforest Alliance have developed a user-friendly manual that enables land-based carbon project proponents to undertake cost-effective social and biodiversity impact assessment (SBIA). The SBIA Manual is oriented to the CCB Standards, but the approach described is applicable to other multiple benefit carbon standards, as well as to other types of payments for ecosystem services (PES) projects.

Cameroon, Ghana & Uganda’s Gender & REDD+ Roadmaps: A National, Policy-Level Initiative
|
These Roadmaps—the first of their kind—were produced during the first phase of the project for each country process and identified context-specific gender and REDD+ concerns, stakeholders, and concrete actions to integrate and enhance gender in REDD+ processes and initiatives. This case study highlights a follow-up process to establish a national-level Gender Task Force in each country to function as an implementing entity of the Gender and REDD+ Roadmap, and continue to support the national and sub-national policy dialogue, as well as ensuring gender-responsive REDD+ actions and outcomes in projects.

Climate-Resilient Biodiversity Programming Stocktaking
|
It is no surprise to conservationists that biodiversity is at great risk from climate change; however, as climate impacts become more acute, attention to the long-term impacts of climate change is growing. In 2022, Measuring Impact II (MI2) helped USAID review 111 activities over the last 10 years to understand how the Agency’s Biodiversity programming is already addressing climate impacts, and to identify practices that can be improved for greater impact. This slide deck presents the results of this stocktaking activity, as presented across USAID.

Coastal Resilience to Climate Change: Integrating Biodiversity, Adaptation, and Sustainable Landscapes in West Africa
|
USAID’s West Africa Biodiversity and Climate Change (WA BiCC) activity aims to improve biodiversity conservation, increase climate resilience, and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across forest landscapes in West Africa. By working through regional partners, and with targeted national and sub-national institutions, WA BiCC increases the capacity of institutions at all levels to reduce wildlife trafficking, promote cross-border law enforcement and governance, reduce deforestation and forest degradation, and promote climate-resilient, low-emission growth in coastal areas across West Africa. Read more in this case study.

Coastal Urbanization Influences Human Pathogens and Microdebris Contamination in Seafood
|
Seafood is one of the leading imported products implicated in foodborne outbreaks worldwide. Coastal marine environments are being increasingly subjected to reduced water quality from urbanization and leading to contamination of important fishery species. To illustrate the potential health risks associated with urbanization in a coastal environment, this research studied a vast range of potential human bacterial pathogens and microdebris contaminants in seawater, sediment and an important oyster fishery along the Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar.

Conservation Enterprises Learning Brief: Assessing the Core Assumption that Enterprise Benefits Promote Conservation Attitudes and Behaviors - Summary of Resources
|
One of the core assumptions in a theory of change for supporting conservation enterprises is that the benefits–both monetary and non-monetary—participants receive promote desired attitudes and behaviors toward biodiversity conservation. This brief summarizes select resources that have more systematically assessed how increased benefits have led to attitudes and behavior change. In taking a closer look at these studies, conservation enterprise teams should reflect on how they might contribute to the evidence base for this key assumption.

Democratising forest business: a compendium of successful locally controlled forest business organisations

The main purpose of this book is to present 19 case studies from 14 developing countries that show how local people have been democratising forest business. By this is meant the process of asserting collective local control through ownership and management arrangements so that the integrated needs of families, communities and indigenous peoples remain central to the business operation.

Empowering Cambodian Youth to Reduce Bushmeat Demand: USAID Cambodia Green Future
|
This case study describes how USAID Cambodia Green Future, implemented by ECODIT and FHI 360, uses a social and behavior change communications approach (SBCC) to empower Cambodian citizens and civil society, especially the youth population, to promote the conservation of the country’s natural resources. Focus areas for conservation campaigns include reducing demand for luxury wood furniture, littering, and reducing the buying and eating of wild meat, referred to as bushmeat by the project team.

The University of British Columbia’s Fisheries Economic Resource Unit (UBC/FERU) was commissioned to help implement USAID's Distant Water Fleet (DWF) Research Agenda. Through analysis of the Sea Around Us database, a literature review, and expert interviews, UBC/FERU researchers have characterized interactions between DWF and domestic fishing activities in selected geographies. These results were discussed further in a webinar on July 5, 2022.
